The Theme

Planetariums come in all sizes and capabilities. Each one is as unique as the Planetarian running it. But we often face similar challenges and programming needs. This summit's theme of First Light: Lifting Up K-12 Planetariums focuses on K-12 education and how these early planetarium experiences will spark a light of scientific interest in students.

We will also dive into the logistics challenges associated with portable planetariums and what it looks like when a whole School District comes together to share this amazing resource.

Speakers

Meet your hosts and speakers.

Rebecca

Rebecca is an Educational Technology Specialist for Windsor Public Schools (PreK-12) with 28 years of experience. She specializes in creating transformative learning environments by deploying customized Google Workspace strategies. Forward-thinking and innovative, Rebecca currently leads cutting-edge AI initiatives and integrates immersive planetarium learning to engage and motivate today's digital learners for the 21st century.

Stephen

Stephen has worked in the Windsor Public Schools for 33 years as an elementary teacher, middle school technology teacher and now as an Educational Technology Specialist. He has witnessed first hand the power of technology to enhance educational achievement and engagement for all students.

Karrie Berglund

Karrie Berglund is the co-founder of Digitalis and serves as its Director of Education, leading curriculum development, product design, and international sales. A planetarium educator since 1995, she has extensive experience with both fixed and portable planetariums and is especially passionate about sharing the cultural stories of the night sky. Karrie is the founder and board president of the Live Interactive Planetarium Symposium (LIPS) and is a Fellow of both the International Planetarium Society and the Great Lakes Planetarium Association.

Diana Yoder

Diana Yoder is an Education Specialist at Digitalis, where she trains planetarium educators, develops standards-based educational resources, and supports customers across North America. She began her planetarium career at Clemson University before working at the South Carolina State Museum and later the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery. With degrees in Physics and Astronomy and years of experience in both fixed and portable planetariums, Diana is passionate about astronomy education and helping audiences discover the night sky.

Carlos Miranda

Carlos Miranda is the Planetarium Manager for P-TECH High School in the Paterson School District in New Jersey, where he oversees both the district's fixed planetarium and its portable "Road Show" program, bringing immersive STEM experiences to thousands of students each year. A former science teacher with an Ed.D. in Instructional Leadership, Carlos is passionate about expanding access to science education through innovative outreach. He also serves as a NASA Solar System Ambassador and explores new ways to use planetariums to support student learning and engagement.

Browse for flights to Bradley International Airport. BDL is about 10 miles (15 minutes) from the High School and 15 miles (20 minutes) to downtown Hartford.

By Road

Windsor High School is a short jump from I91, between Hartford and Windsor Locks, CT. Springfield, MA is only a 25 minute drive away.
